No one escapes heartbreak.
Beginning when we are very young, our hearts get broken on a regular basis. It often happens as a result of shattered hopes or life-altering losses.
But the message of the Christian faith is that joy can overcome sorrow, and that we can find healing for our heartbreak. As this happens, we are able to bear witness to God’s grace and goodness in a world where these qualities often seem hard to find.
The Christian faith invites us to see God, the world, and ourselves in a radically new way. When we are converted to Christ, we take a giant leap out of darkness into light. As the Apostle Paul explains, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:13-15).
I hope you have a great day today — maybe your best ever! You probably wish the same for me and for all the people you love and care about.
We all want our lives to go well — even great — every day. But it’s sobering to realize we can’t control what will happen to us. On any given day, we might experience great joy or great pain or a thousand and one combinations of the two.
As twenty-first century Christians, we’ll never walk with Jesus beside the Sea of Galilee or hear him preach from a mountaintop. In order to experience his presence, we have to look inside ourselves. He promises to meet us in the depths of our own hearts, whether those depths are quiet or stormy, overflowing with joy or overwhelmed by despair.
